The Writer
Shareef Crawford, a celebrated writer of romantic fiction hasn‘t lived in his birthplace of Harlem, New York, in twelve years, and not since his last
summer vacation from Morehouse University in Atlanta. After his graduation a decadeago, Shareef served his dues as a top reporter and writer for the Florida
Sentinel newspaper, married his college sweetheart, and became a father to a
couple of kids in South Florida before trying his hand as a budding novelist.
Ten years later, he's become one of the most successful and recognized
authors in America, a New York Times bestseller, a Black Hearts Book Award recipient, and the ladies choice of African-American male writers nationally as well as abroad. But his climb to fame and fortune as a published author was never
enough, and his novels lacked real meaning to him. He wanted more respect for his
craft, particularly from his peer group of urban men. So when an enticing new
fan suggests that Shareef return to his roots and write a true crime story
about an imprisoned Harlem gangster who has admired his books from jail, the
street-smart author finally gets a chance to write something more edgy and purposeful.
However, the Harlem he returns to in year 2006 has changed, and the stakes of survival are higher now than they've ever been. Amongst the rise of high-priced condominiums, a changing population, young criminals gunning to make names for themselves, and old criminals fighting to become legitimate businessmen, Shareef finds himself caught in the middle of a real-life thriller, where past foes become friends, and trusted friends become dangerous foes. Nevertheless, the writer is hell bent to do anything that he feels he must to gain the respect on the streets that his career as a novelist has failed to give him.
